How AI Characters Work: The Technology Behind AI Chatbots
AI characters combine a general language model with instructions and conversation context that describe a particular persona. They do not contain a tiny conscious person or a fixed script. Each reply is generated from the information available at that moment.
The language model
A language model learns statistical patterns from large collections of text during training. When you send a message, it predicts a useful continuation based on your input and the context supplied by the application. Different platforms may use different models or settings, which is one reason the same character concept can feel different across services.
The character prompt
The character definition usually contains a name, personality, background, speaking style, goals and example dialogue. The application places some or all of this information into the model's context. Clear, compatible instructions make it easier for the model to produce a consistent voice.
Your persona and scenario
Many roleplay platforms also let the user define who they are and where the scene begins. A scenario gives the model immediate facts to work with: location, relationship, conflict and tone. Your messages then update the scene turn by turn.
Context windows
The context window is the amount of text the model can consider for a reply. It may include character instructions, recent messages and saved notes. When a conversation becomes longer than the available context, older details may be summarized, omitted or forgotten. This is why repeating an important fact naturally can improve a long roleplay.
Memory systems
Some applications save selected facts outside the immediate chat and add them back later. This can improve continuity, but “memory” is not perfect human recall. It may depend on automated summaries, user-written notes or platform-specific retrieval systems. Users should check current platform documentation rather than assuming every character remembers across sessions.
Sampling and variation
Generation settings control how predictable or varied a reply can be. More variation may create surprising ideas but can also increase inconsistency. Applications often tune these settings for different experiences such as casual chat, creative roleplay or factual assistance.
Safety and moderation layers
Platforms can apply rules before or after generation, including age requirements, content classifiers and blocked topics. These systems are separate from the visible character profile and can change over time. Review each platform's current policies, privacy terms and controls before using it.
Why characters sometimes break character
Conflicting instructions, vague profiles, very long chats and sudden scene changes can all weaken consistency. Help by writing a clear opener, keeping actions understandable and reminding the character of crucial context without trying to override platform safeguards.
